Folded House is located in Chatuchak district, one of the most densely built residential areas and business district of Bangkok. This two-story house has a footprint of 215 square meters and is 8 meters high. The idea of the architects was to create spatial organization for residential architecture with the experimentation of ‘Folding’ as a generative tool in architectural design process.
The u-shaped house is placed on a north- south axis. The north side facing the court of small garden and the Elephant building, the significant landmark of the district, was designed in double – height space and used as multipurpose space for dining, recreation, and circulation, where performing as observatory space toward surrounding contexts. Additionally, the house planning was concerned about the issue of energy efficient design with the orientation of the building; for example, The East wing of U-shaped house, where the main entrance and living space, has been shaded from the heat gain of sunlight by the West wing of the building and also with the trees’ shading at courtyard in everyday afternoon. Moreover, the use of low technology likes solar slab could also protect roof plane from direct light which cloud lead to the temperature reduction in the interior space.
